What is nitrous oxide?
Nitrous oxide (also known as laughing gas) has been used to alleviate patient anxiety during dental procedures for over 100 years.
How does nitrous oxide alleviate dental anxiety?
When it is inhaled, nitrous oxide will produce a general feeling of calm and well-being.
How is nitrous oxide administered?
Nitrous oxide is a gas. It is dispensed in carefully measured doses. A patient wears a mask over her nose and breathes in the near odourless gas.
While inhaling nitrous oxide, you will be awake at all times. The effects of nitrous oxide will be apparent within a few minutes of inhalation.
What will I feel while I am under the effects of nitrous oxide?
You may feel a general sensation of calm, mild tingling in your hands and feet, a feeling of being in a floating or dream-like state, and a disconnection from your anxiety. Some patients even forget they are having a dental procedure.
Can I drive myself home after I have had nitrous oxide?
Yes. Within a short time of breathing regular oxygen again, the effects of the nitrous oxide will disappear. Patients are normally able to drive themselves home. If you have concerns about driving following your procedure, speak with our caring team.
Is nitrous oxide right for me?
If you are nervous about an upcoming dental procedure, tell us. We'll make your well-being our priority, and we'll explain your options thoroughly, to help you decide if nitrous oxide is right for you.
What is oral sedation?
Oral sedation is a safe and effective method of managing dental anxiety. Oral sedation allows us to provide effective support for our anxious patients by reducing their anxiety to a manageable level during dental procedures.
When is oral sedation recommended?
We often recommend oral sedation to patients who are very nervous about an upcoming dental appointment. It is suitable for both short and long appointments. It is very effective for most types of dental procedures.
How will I know if oral sedation is right for me?
If you are nervous about an upcoming dental procedure, speak to our talented team of dental professionals at Fort Malden Dentistry.
Which medication is prescribed for oral sedation?
Many different types of medications can be used to manage dental anxiety. We will thoroughly review your medical history to determine if you are a good candidate for oral sedation, and then recommend the medication that best suits your needs.
When will I have to take my medication?
Depending on the type of oral sedation we suggest, you may be required to take the medication the night before your procedure in order to get a good night’s sleep.
Then, you'll take a second dose in the morning before you arrive for your appointment.
Can oral sedation be combined with other treatments?
Yes, oral sedation is often combined with nitrous oxide to provide a very complete treatment for your dental anxiety.
Can I drive myself home after the procedure?
Since the medication can make you very drowsy, we do not recommend driving following an appointment under oral sedation.
You will need to arrange for someone to drive you to your appointment, and home as well.
Once at home, you should have someone arrange to stay with you as you may be drowsy for the rest of the day.
