Digital Panoramic X-Rays
What is a panoramic x-ray?
A panoramic x-ray, or an “orthopantomogram”, is a type of x-ray that presents a view of both the upper and lower jaws. They produce crisp, clear images and you will be able to see images of your teeth and jaw right away.
What type of panoramic x-ray does the team at Fort Malden Dentistry use?
The panoramic x-ray system in our office at Fort Malden Dentistry is digital. With the use of our panoramic digital x-ray system, we are almost a completely paperless office!
Why would I need to have a panoramic x-ray taken?
There are several reasons why our dental team may recommend that you have a panoramic x-ray taken. Panoramic x-rays have detected blocked carotid arteries and pinpointed the source of chronic sinus infections by revealing an infected tooth impacted in the sinus cavity. They also are used for orthodontic treatment planning and for diagnosing third molar status, TMJ problems, and jaw fractures.
Can a panoramic x-ray be used to check for damage in my smile?
Yes! The panoramic x-ray system is ideal for checking for this type of damage. If you have been involved in an accident, a full understanding of your injuries is essential for treatment planning. For example, if you have fallen and sustained impact to your face, we may recommend a panoramic x-ray to ensure we have a comprehensive understanding of the extent of the damage to your jaw and teeth.
Will a panoramic x-ray be uncomfortable?
No, a panoramic x-ray is not at all uncomfortable. Our team will help you position yourself correctly in the panoramic x-ray machine. We will ensure that you are properly protected. After you are in position, we will leave the room and take the x-ray. All you will hear is a beep while the machine spins around your head while the x-ray is taken.
